Ironic since their best argument is the libertarian one

I don't think it's ironic. There are three basic reasons for supporting abortion rights, seems to me, and three different mindsets to go with them. There are a few other with different reasons, like racism or overpopulation, but basically there are three.

Abortion is as perfect an example of a libertarian issue as there is, which is why I am so solidly pro-choice.

The second reason is simple pragmatism. It is counterproductive for society to produce unwanted children and will only cause problems down the line.

The third reason is the bleeding-heart reason, to relieve suffering. As it happens, the bleeding heart subset coincides with the big government "socialists" so it's only natural for them to expect the government to pay for this and all other suffering relief for those who can't afford it. That would be a given for them.

So you have several entirely different kinds of people coming down on the same side of this issue for different reasons. It's not unusual for different groups to form a coalition of convenience on one particular issue. Now, if the libertarians in the coalition were the ones pushing the funding for abortions but against funding for other medical services, that would be ironic. As it is, the pro-choicers are simply an amalgamation.
