Because I prefer to choose the appropriate measure to answer the question.

If the question is - Are American workers better off than they used to be? - Than share of GDP doesn't give you the answer. Real compensation does (to the extent that any statistic can, the real answer is complex, includes non-monetary factors, and also deals with subjective preferences and opinions)

If the question is - Is defense spending a bigger or smaller burden then it used to be? Then share of GDP does give you the answer.

Now I guess you could be thinking about or asking different questions...
