CHRONOLOGY-Recent consolidation moves by stock exchanges Thu Jun 21, 2007 6:48am ET
(Reuters) - The London Stock Exchange (LSE.L: Quote, Profile , Research) board of directors was due to meet on Thursday to discuss the terms of a possible deal with Borsa Italiana, sources close to the situation told Reuters.
Here is a chronology of recent merger or acquisition moves by stock exchanges worldwide:
April 11, 2006 - Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. (NDAQ.O: Quote, Profile , Research) buys a 15 percent stake in the London Stock Exchange (LSE.L: Quote, Profile , Research). Nasdaq subsequently raises its stake to just below 30 percent in a failed takeover bid.
June 2 - NYSE Group Inc. reaches agreement to buy Paris-based European exchange operator Euronext (ENXT.PA: Quote, Profile , Research) in a pioneering transatlantic deal. The merged exchange NYSE Euronext (NYX.PA: Quote, Profile , Research) (NYX.N: Quote, Profile , Research) makes its market debut on April 4, 2007.
Oct 6 - Nordic stock exchange group OMX (OMX.ST: Quote, Profile , Research) buys a 10 percent stake in the Oslo stock exchange.
Oct 17 - Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc. (CME.N: Quote, Profile , Research), reaches agreement to buy cross-town rival CBOT Holdings, Inc. (BOT.N: Quote, Profile , Research), ending a century of competition to create the world's largest publicly traded exchange by market capitalisation.
Nov 30 - OMX buys Iceland's stock exchange and securities depository.
Jan 10, 2007 - The NYSE and others, including Goldman Sachs (GS.N: Quote, Profile , Research), pay $460 million for stakes totalling 20 percent in India's National Stock Exchange (NSE).
Jan 12 - Atlanta-based IntercontinentalExchange Inc. (ICE.N: Quote, Profile , Research) buys the New York Board of Trade (NYBOT).
Feb 14 - Germany's Deutsche Boerse (DB1Gn.DE: Quote, Profile , Research) buys a 5 percent stake in the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
March 7 - Singapore Exchange Ltd (SGXL.SI: Quote, Profile , Research) buys a 5 percent stake in the Bombay Stock Exchange for $42.7 million.
April 30 - Deutsche Boerse says it will buy U.S. options market International Securities Exchange (ISE.N: Quote, Profile , Research) for $2.8 billion, creating the No. 1 transatlantic derivatives marketplace.
May 25 - Nasdaq agrees to buy OMX for $3.7 billion.
