I dont know enough to say for sure but I really dont understand how a nonprofit organization could be legally culpable so my guess is that this some sort of settlement so the the catholic church can avoid even more public dirty wash and have some of the more seedier details from coming to light and avoiding their bishops going on trial for complicity. It seems more akin to a ceo spending millions of shareholder money so he can avoid going to jail, than nefarious external influences. Now obviously attys are happier to get millions of dollars than sending some bishop to jail so thats a factor as im sure is the vatican. but again i feel sorry for the communities who suffer for the sins of others.
