Good signs from Afghanistan too

Taliban tactics
Strategy Page:

The Taliban Spring Offensive didn't happen, and the Taliban took a beating from NATO and U.S. attacks. The Taliban persisted in trying to use platoon size (30-50 gunmen) units, which regularly were spotted by UAVs and blasted by smart bombs. In response to this, the Taliban are cooperating more with al Qaeda terror attacks. These are more successful, but will not win Taliban back control of the country. In fact, as demonstrated in Iraq and elsewhere, al Qaeda terrorism just make the terrorists more unpopular with the population they are trying to intimidate and conquer. Al Qaeda leaders have not yet come to grips with this reality....

In Insurgents Terrorists and Militias Richard H. Shultz and Adrea J. Dew have a chapter on Afghanistan which describes how the mujahideen defeated the Soviets and indeed how they defeated earlier efforts by the British to control Afghanistan. They basically used the same ambush tactics that have failed the Taliban in this war. The US and NATO through technology and tactics have defeated the old Afghan way of making war against outsiders.

The Taliban's resort to al Qaeda terror tactics is also a loser in Afghanistan. To the extent that it inflicts civilian casualties, it increases the hostility of the Afghans to the Taliban. The use of human shields by the Taliban is also deeply resented and has resulted in many of the tribes killing Taliban representatives who enter their villages.

The AFP reports that the Taliban are worried about spies. This is good news. They are very likely to turn on themselves in the search for spies and we can aid this endeavor by making it appear that some of the Taliban are actually working for us. there is nothing like stirring up a little distrust among our enemies.
