Because some people realize that no one can really agree who the barbarians are...

I know some people here are SURE that the Muslims are the barbarians, but I'm very sure if you were an honored guest in a Muslim home, being offered the hospitality of the house, the host might shake his head at the barbarity of the West- at our crudity, at our lack of piousness and graciousness, and our perceived aggressiveness, and our rapacious demand for the materials of other less powerful countries.

I'm not saying these are characteristics of our society, but they are certainly perceived characteristics in other countries.

I have read Mahfouz, a brilliant author, and a most civilized artist, and he represents a huge number of citizens of the ME.

You want to define who the barbarians are- but keep in mind that almost everyone wants to do that, and in any war it is common for both sides to be convinced the other side is replete with barbarians. Frequently the most extreme members of both sides are equally horrible.
