Most consider the "torture" you speak of is simply separation from God. I know a fellow who had a near death experience when he was drinking heavy and said he experienced being in a cold totally dark place where he sensed the presence of other miserably unhappy beings.

No, in fact there's social science research that shows that religious involvement is good for individuals, families, and society as a whole. This is undeniable.
