"Rehashing history with hypotheticals is pointless.

I completely disagree. History is our only example and extrapolating hypotheticals from lessons of history is a cautious way to strategize going forward, in an effort to avoid repeating awful mistakes of the past.

"Where to from now is what matters."

Absolutely. As Americans we founded a nation of laws based on principle. We have established a position of strenghth in this world based on principle and the development of our strategic infrastructure and resources.

"Backing Israel against invasion is a reasonable idea. Backing Taiwan against invasion likewise. Invading North Korea seems a doubtful idea. Same for Zimbabwe."

Whether or not to back particular nations is a decision based on our national principled interests and our national strategic interests. Neither can be sacrificed for the other in vision or in method without losing all in the long run.
