alan; Virgin land is never slashed and burned. It has the timber removed first. It is the 3-5 year growth that is slashed and burned as the natives migrate their crops from zone to zone. The cycle is getting shorter as the larger population means they must give the land less time to regenerate between crops/burns. It would be unlikely for any mining co to slash and burn a large area. Even the largest open pit mine is quite small in land area.
It is possible that an open pit area may be burned to clear it, but I would use bulldozers as a first choice.
