There is a point in every battle where your enemy cracks. If you recognize that point, you can totally defeat him by going into "hot pursuit." Meade and Lee at Gettysburg is an excellent example. If Meade had pursued Lee after he broke him there, the "Army of Virgina" would have been destroyed. He didn't, and the Civil war went on.

We hit a point in Normandy when the Germans broke. Pursued then, we could have been in Berlin a month or two later. We didn't. We allowed them to regroup. In fact Ike's Quartermaster General used the gas supply to set himself up in Paris, and left Patton setting there, dry. Guess what Patton would have done if he had been in charge.
