I believe in Canada it was mandatory for new cars made in 1990 and after to have daytime running lights, aka DRLs.

These people are against them:

But you can really see cars easier with the lights on in the day. There are so many cars on the road when I drive with DRLs you don’t even notice the lights are on. But when an older car (pre 1990) goes by, I tend to notice that they don’t have DRLs.

I use to drive with my lights on shortly after getting my drivers license and I remember people would flash their lights at me thinking I forgot to turn them off, when actually I was trying to drive safer with them on. This was long before DRLs were mandatory.
