Faith became an issue in US politics precisely because people felt there was an absolute effort to scrub it out of the public sphere, while the ordinary mortals in both government and the electorate still had issues of faith in their lives.

That's what gave Falwell et al an opening to create the political evangelical movement. Your post could be a recruiting poster for them.

Voters respond best when politicians address them as who they are, not dictating who they must be to meet one group's agenda. Clinton could get away with all kinds of crap because a majority of Americans felt that he "got it" most of the time. Bush doesn't because he tried to take one narrow agenda and shove it on everyone.
