That sums it up very well. And excluding the issue leaves it to the far right to use as a mobilizing wedge.

I remember when Reagan first caught on in the late 1970's by finding the themes that middle America felt Washington had totally ignored. Only Clinton could win those voters back, with an appeal to their centrist views, not an ideological blast in the party activist style.

The last two elections, the Dems couldn't quite achieve that same momentum with swing voters. Finding a way to reach out and win over that constituency will determine whether they get back in the White House or not. A majority of those voters consider faith to be part of their daily lives, inextricably woven into everything else.

On healthcare, after reviewing the paperwork for my mother's latest treatments, a single payer system would be bliss. The current system is chaos.
