I managed to avoid that for a while by choosing to opt out of insurance, thus making my husband's fabulous insurance pay everything.

I was told another sneaky way around your own private insurance jihad, is to opt for Kaiser with one plan, and non Kaiser with another. I don't know if this is true, but since Kaiser only does in network, you can go out of network and fall back on your other insurance. I don't know if this is true, and I plan on researching it.

My main negative experiences with insurance have been doctors billing incorrectly. A full YEAR after my surgery, I just got a bill from the infectious disease guy for 15,000 dollars. On the bill it said "Insurance company claims you are not insured". What a surprise, considering they paid everything else.

The doctor's office had billed the wrong number- 3 TIMES.

I called them and said "WHY didn't you call me the first time this was refused?" "we didn't want to bother you," they said. Now while that is sweet, I don't want to pay 15k for the privilege of not being bothered.

A conference call with the insurer straightened this out, but geez, what MORONS.
