Cary,

RE CYMI - INTC analogy. I would suggest that INTC's current technology is not significantly more advanced than their competitors. In fact, Cyrix and AMD would like us to believe they provide the best value. INTC is in the driver's seat. They innovate first and set the prices. That's the advantage I see for CYMI when I compare it with INTC.

RE: CYMI -Komatsu: Part of CYMI's technical advantage comes from the $ that Reagan through at SDI. Part of it is their laser brainpower (similar to Bill Gates hiring as many of the best brains that he can get). Most of it is just accepting "reality". Companies don't get overwhelming monopoly positions because they have:

1. Inferiour management
2. Inappropriate strategy
3. Lesser products

Whether CYMI "sneered" at Komatsu's claims or merely cautioned that one should adopt a Missouri attitude [show me], is probably more a matter of where one currently stands with respect to Cymer's prospects I accept THC's argument that the decision will be made by the chipmakers, and not by the litho tool makers. I don't accept his insinuation that Komatsu is doomed to provide inferiour service forever. Clearly, if they made a superiour product that chipmakers wanted, they would get the support and parts whereever it's needed to support the sales. IMO.

Ian.
