In addition to grabbing the land of those who attacked them, they grabbed the land of the people with whom they were supposed to share the land under the Palestinian Mandate. Palestinians attacked them too, and the original borders where not defensible. If the Arabs (including the Palestinians) would have accepted Israel and acted peacefully, you would have had a smaller Israel.
