Yes, having the southwest stolen out from under our noses is worse than spending a trillion dollars. I'm no history expert, but didn't we steal it from them first? We didn't actually steal California. We paid $18 million for it. Chump change by today's standards but back in 1848 it was a lot of money: "The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, marked the end of the Mexican-American War. In that treaty, the United States agreed to pay Mexico $18,250,000; Mexico formally ceded California (and other northern territories) to the United States, and a new international boundary was drawn; San Diego Bay is one of the only natural harbors in California south of San Francisco, and to claim all this strategic water, the border was slanted to include it." en.wikipedia.org
