Moving away from our sniping back and forth at eachother, back to the original point that set it off -

You responded that I was "out of touch" in response to "hat is at least partially covered by "because people's expectations are higher these days." The higher expectations include larger and better living spaces that cost more, and includes more eating out, and more eating prepared meals, rather than buying bulk foods and preparing and cooking them at home. Also money spent on other parts of the higher expectations is unavailable for spending on food or rent."

Are you trying to deny that among working class people eating out, and eating pre-prepared foods is more common are both more common than they where a couple of generations ago?

Do you deny that the average employed person has more space in his home or apartment than his counterpart in the past? Not only is the average house bigger, and the average apartment bigger, but more people live in houses (which are typically larger then apartments) and the average family size is smaller, and more people live alone, so you have less people in that larger space. As for housing for the poor, in the past they often lived in places that couldn't meet today's building and health codes.

Even if all the extra cars, electronics, and services count nothing in your opinion (and there isn't any good reason for that to be the case), my point was still accurate.
