I dunno. Look at New Zealand. Primary care is free to the residents. There is a charge for a doctors visit, but that is fairly low by US standards, a max of a bit more than $50US. Prescriptions are capped at $15NZ. Or about $10US. A lot of other care is either free or heavily subsidized.

So, what is the cost of this to the government? In 2006, it was running about $1.4 billion a quarter, or a bit under $1 billion US. Considering that there are 4 million Kiwis, that works out to be about $1k US per person, per year. The equivalent cost in the US is more than 4 times this amount per capita.

Well, ok. The extra money should buy something. Well, compare life expectancy in New Zealand to the US. Compare infant mortality...
