Philips Sets DVD-ROM Launch
(10/06/97; 9:02 a.m. EDT)
By Roger C. Lanctot, Computer Retail Week

Philips Professional Solutions expects to ship its first DVD-ROM package, the DVD-5200, on Nov. 5. The internal IDE/ATAPI drive allows users to view movies on their PC or their TV and will have a list price of $600.

Unlike other DVD-ROM drives on the market, the DRD-5200 is described by Philips as a DVD-ROM equipped with a dual-laser design to enable
compatibility with all CD formats including audio CD, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW. The drive can also play DVD-Video disks and is equipped with all of the necessary video and audio outputs to allow playback of
movies on the computer monitor or on a television.

Philips plans to ship the internal IDE/ATAPI drive with four or five DVD-Video titles when it ships, according to Akyra Pagoulatos, director of the professional solutions division. Those titles had not been chosen at press time. Philips also will bundle a Sigma Designs REALmagic Hollywood DVD/MPEG-2 decoder board with the product along with software drivers and installation cables.

"The DRD-5200 represents the growing trend toward designing convergence products that can be used with a PC or TV set," Pagoulatos said. "With the growing number of DVD titles available, we envision the use of several DVD devices in a home."

The drive is designed to fit in any 5.25-inch, half-height drive bay and features a power-assisted tray and average access time of 190 milliseconds (DVD) and 150 milliseconds (CD-ROM).
