Be careful and dont read too much into what your Grandparents faced compared to today. I am old enough (64) that I remember when most of us were uninsured and paid out of our own pocket, and doctors CAME TO THE HOUSE. The market tends to charge what can be afforded. Health care was very much cheaper in those days cause if people have to pay out of their own pocket their funds are limited, plus people didnt go for the sniffles. Today, even a millionaire cannot afford hardly any even somewhat significant operation and/or hospital stay. I believe one of the reasons is because of health insurance which has driven up the supply of money, thus the prices, as well as a lot of people abusing the system by overusing it. My greatest fear of public health is that if everyone THINKS they are getting it for free they will run to the dr. for every little thing swamping the system even more. If we ever go to a public system seems to me its going to have to be something like a catastrophe program whereas the individual pays the first amount and the public portion kicking in at a higher level. Even most private insurances require a $20 or so deductible for office visits to assist in people not abusing. jdn
