Thanks, that helped but it was also puzzling. I have never exercised a put before. In particular the statement

"Basically I lost my short shares against the exercise. If I were naked, then I would have had to buy to close."

didn't make sense to me. If I am exercising puts you wrote then I want to be short the actual stock. If you wrote them naked, wouldn't you need to short the stock to meet the assignment, and then the short position would be assigned to me?

This statement also didn't make sense to me:

If you wanted to remain short you would not have exercised.

Aren't I exercising my put options because I DO want to remain short? If I didn't want to remain short I could just sell them.
