re: "And the model only works in states with net metering laws"
---------
The Feds could easily mandate these laws.

With some kind of subsidy to the power companies? The utilities argument is "Yeah OK these guys are generating electricity but they don't have to pay for the grid infrastructure blah blah blah...". Which makes some sense.

I would like to see an analysis when you take into account the cost of building new nuke and other power plants, versus distributed solar (and wind) power generation costs.

Anyway the SunEdison business model is fascinating. They supply the equipment but they have no real estate costs including land, property taxes insurance and whatever. No cost whatsoever to the retailer... and they get the good PR. A little more from the web site:
-----------------------
How it Works
We deploy grid-tied solar systems at your facility, remotely monitor energy production, and then provide a simplified and reduced monthly energy bill. Because the systems have no fuel costs, you benefit from predictable, long-term prices equal to or below current retail rates. With no upfront purchase investments or complex lease agreements, customers benefit from a hassle-free renewable energy experience.
A Service Focus
While SunEdison manages every phase of the process - from project financing to design and development to construction, installation, and maintenance, we also understand the sensitive nature of the facilities where we work. We provide customers with a single SunEdison point of contact to prevent issues from becoming problems.
Proven Technology, Reliable Partners
SunEdison uses proven technologies and trusted solar suppliers and manufacturers to deliver its solar energy services. From panel manufacturers, to inverters and monitoring systems, SunEdison uses only proven solutions. With long-term supply contracts from all the major vendors, you are assured your system will be installed in a timely fashion.
