RE That's a hangover of the whole epater les bourgeois 19th century romantic mentality about artists. For most of history, artists have been artisans, plying their craft to make a living, with no more non-conformity implied by being a painter than being a cabinet-maker.

The term artist has more than one meaning.
An "Artist "has always had high social standing and a certain artistic licence with regard to life style.
An artisan is just another dogs body.

I do not think anybody would consider leonardo ,donatello, celini or botticelli, to name only a few ,only cabinate makers.
Many "artist" were more than just painters and sculpturers.....

There are the many who actively developed new techniques in their arts.

Techniques which demanded the highest technical skill of the age to master.
An example would be the use of "the prospective" or the casting of large bronzes

If you are interested in an easy read.try Benvenuto Cellinis' auto biograph.
He was an ego maniac at the center of the world stage.....Art, multiple murder, sorcery, siege combined with kings, popes and emporers make for an all star cast and a non stop plot.

Artists create.
