I'm having a discussion with someone about what liberals are. Since most of us are somewhat, to very (me), liberal here, would anyone like to talk about it? I think it might be more interesting to discuss it here, at least for me:

It seems to me that by our nature we are, as liberals, constantly moving forward to fight new battles (even when we have to make up the battles). Liberals like to march, and carry signs, and protest. That makes it tough in times when it's hard to find a target for a protest- luckily we do not live in such times :-)
While I think the world needs both liberals and conservatives, I think the person with whom I was posting wishes to define liberals today, as if they were the liberals of yesterday- which doesn't fit with the moving target of liberalism (and really conservatism too is a moving target, since they often move in to the old social positions of the liberals, after the dust settles down from the social battle.) There aren't many "conservatives" of today trying to argue women shouldn't have the vote, for example. |
