If one of these crashes with a load of troops, that will be the end of them.

It will happen. It is inevitable. But neither a crash nor several will signal the end of the program.

If such where the case we would never have transitioned from the H-34 helicopter to the Huey. Or from the F-105 to today's fighters. Even the video game featuring the F-105 crashed frequently.
