Many laws were not yet in place that had the goal of keeping US markets more transparent. There were no anti-trust laws at the time. The Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, Kennedys, Rockefellers, etc. made their fortunes in pre-regulation days. That said, the markets continue today to be only slightly more transparent than pea soup. Greed rules Wall St. That's why American citizens should consider the defeat of the immigration bill a great victory...extremely powerful & globalized American companies are those craving slave-wage illegal workers to meet their quarterly earning reports. There's a new drive to abolish the quarterly reports and revert to semi-annual or annual, thereby eliminating a great deal of short-term pressure and wisely replacing it with long-term strategic planning.
