ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The federal government has given the Alaska Department of Labor a multi-million dollar grant to train 8,300 workers needed to construct a natural gas pipeline.

The $7.5 million grant is from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The only drawback, now, however is getting a pipeline.

This year, the state Legislature passed the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act to encourage producers and independent pipeline companies to vie for rights to build a pipeline.

The new law is designed to stimulate competition through inducements, but the state's three largest oil companies oppose some requirements in the bill.

Bids for the right to build the pipeline will go out next week.
