Wayne, because you mistakenly believe that the press is liberal. Every tv news show I've seen mentioned that the bill was a loss for Bush and the Congressional Democrats (not the ones running for Prez), but a huge loss of the Hispanic vote for the Republicans who killed it. The main point is that Bush made this bill his number one domestic priority and twisted arms to get his way, and failed. Kennedy co-sponsored the bill, but didn't extend himself to make it pass. The good thing is that the bill was horrible. The bad thing is, nothing better is coming, either.
It is silly to pass any bill when the borders are Swiss Cheese. It is also silly to identify illegal immigrants and then not deport them. The word illegal has no meaning if those are the actions. The bill was designed to kiss corporate butts so they can get dirt cheap labor who can be scared to vote against unions and all they stand for, like a decent wage and health care and work safety. Americans could see that. Strangely enough, though,it was mostly opposed by bigots, who are usually in the pocket of the corporate welfare recipients. That doesn't mean that if you opposed the bill, as I did and do, that you are a bigot. But what came across loud and clear was that the voices most vehemently opposed to the bill didn't hate illegal immigration, they hated immigrants. And read that as Mexicans, as nobody is building a fence on the Canadian border.
I don't believe in Fortress America or in making legal immigration difficult. But it should be a controlled process and right now it is chaos. Thanks, again, Ronnie Babe Reagan. |
