And Bush never wavered. Nobody withdrew anything, nobody made any real concessions. Bush staked his power and reputation on his ability to shut down the power of the blogs and the talkers, and he failed. Not only did he fail, he failed miserably. It was a naked, bare-knuckles slugging match, and we knocked him out cold.

I see some are ready for the victory parade. They need to know this last fight over immigration reform was no Gettysburg.

Gloating over a seemingly vanquished enemy is never pretty and it clouds vision. Careful after action analysis is always important because very few fights become a Gettysburg - meaning a battle to end a war.

Remember every battle exacts a toll. This one was no different. Much valuable capital was expended by both sides, yet the war for immigration reform was not won this week, not even close. If we are to be quite honest about it, we should say nothing was won. The immigration problem still exists in its entirety.

It is much too early to celebrate. This fight is not over. It has hardly begun. There will be another immigration battle. There must be one, otherwise we all lose. And because both sides are now wounded, the next phase of this battle will likely turn sneaky, tricky, and dirty.
