Three statistics gleaned lately, all, I think, from SI postings. All three bear on the price and availability of oil.

1. The entire world has a 53-day supply of edible grains in storage (reports the USDA).

2.A single filling of a 30-gallon SUV tank of ethanol requires corn that would feed a human being for an entire year. Either drive a few hundred miles or die of starvation, depending on your location and wealth.

3. The population of the entire world is increasing every year at a rate equal to the combined populations of Canada and the United States. I think someone posted every WEEK, but that does not seem possible.

And our government is preoccupied with Iraq?
