The regional stance was expressed in the final declaration of the Ninth Summit of the Tuxtla Mechanism for Dialogue and Coordination, attended by presidents of Central American countries and Mexico, as well as representatives from the Dominican Republic and Colombia. The text urges the US to approve a law granting prompt legal status to illegal immigrants and a program of temporary workers leading to an orderly movement of the population. It calls on US Congress to take up again the initiative to legalize 12 million people, which was rejected by the Senate this week. The Government of Guatemala said to hope the already delicate situation of millions of Latin Americans living under fear and threat of deportation does not get worse. At least 35,000 citizens from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, the worst-hit by mass deportations, have been sent home.
