The U.S. observes a sugar import quota to protect U.S. sugar growers so that domestic prices run more than double world prices. Since sugar based ethanol is cheaper and more energy efficient than corn based, why not expand the sugar quota limiting its use strictly for ethanol production. This would also ease corn price pressure , benefit the feed industry and benefit the consumer. The only dissent may come from Archer Daniels and other johnny-come-lately ethanol producers all feasting off the government subsidized ethanol bonanza.
