Empathy does not affect risk assessment (or I should say, there is no logical reason it should). You have confused two unrelated things.

One can have empathy for the climbers who die on Mt Everest, and realizing one is not going to die there oneself does not lessen that empathy.

"Statistically speaking....your empathy for the potential to others is underwhelming...."

I even have emapthy for people fearful of terrorism, but I don't want them planning terrorism responses. If they are swayed by their personal fear, it's quite likely they will plan for the things they fear most, rather than for what we really need. That's my only problem with the fearful- the illogical nature of their societal response.
