It's easy to talk from the sidelines of course
"

Of course its easy ... but I can't understand that move. When
it comes to DIE-size, its clear, that this a key measure for
overall costs and performance. But to cripple a possible good
version just to save 5mm^2 doesn't make really sense at least
to me. The existing SC A64 is a very good core, its not DC,
but overall performance and power is really good. Why not use
this existing core and put it down plain and simple to 65nm?
Its that "easy", because these "new" Semprons don't have to
clock that high. Take an 2,6G SC core with 512KB L2 and sell
it for 30/35$ - its a great CPUs for the low-end and its really
small with 65nm - probably in 50-55mm^2 range. Is a speed loss
of probably 5-10% worth to have a 50mm^2 instead of a 55mm^2
DIE? My opinion: I wouldn't think about that for one second,
use the larger one and be aggressive for speed and price and
try to hold or even gain low-end marketshare.

The SOITEC news isn't exactly encouraging ; will surprise ATI revenues rescue them then ?
"

As some already said, AMD is not the only Soitec customer,
but a 20% drop shouldn't be in place without AMD. Its not
that hard to guess, that AMD is buying fewer wafers. It could
be a FAB38 topic. They are now at 100% in FAB36 - this is my
guess, so they are at 100% waferconsumption-rate here. At the
same time they are driving back FAB30. I don't know what FAB30
is doing these days and at what % of max. capacity they are
doing some work? Looks to me, that AMD drives FAB30 down
further, which would also mean, that they need fewer wafers
in Dresden. Seems logical.

For ATI I don't see any development, why they should show a
better quarter compared to Q1 - why? Volume (PC) should be
down overall, they lost again notebook share and its my
opinion they lost desktop share again too. 2400/2600 was so late,
that they could sell a few parts 2-5 days before the quarter
ended, but not more and 2900XT was a non-issue, because TDP
too high, performance bad and price way too high. Its my guess
that we will see -5 up to -10% for Revs. at ATI QoQ.
