I have a question - does anyone think that the importance of the ME wrt energy can be seriously diminished in the future?

Personally, I cannot see this happening. No matter how much oil we may be able to discover, the ME will still remain a large part of the global energy equation. As we use oil sands or coal - or even nuke energy - they will still have to compete with the ME. In other words, I think that a realistic view would be to accept the fact that - for the foreseeable future - there will be huge amounts of money continuing to flow into the hands of the rulers in the ME.

A potentially more (politically) productive approach would be to continue thriving for stability in the region. Don't allow extremists to become the recipients of oil revenues.
