Sarkozy discusses climate change, Iraq with McCain

Jul 5 04:54 PM US/Eastern

French President Nicolas Sarkozy Thursday met with US Senator John McCain, one of the main contenders for the 2008 Republican nomination, and discussed a raft of issues including climate change and Iraq.
The Arizona senator met Sarkozy during a stopover in Paris before heading on to Iraq. The 70-year-old former Vietnam War prisoner was accompanied by Lindsay Graham, the Republican senator from South Carolina.

McCain congratulated Sarkozy on his "commitment" to fighting climate change and his stance on Afghanistan, Syria and Iran during the hour-long meeting.

He said Sarkozy "wanted to establish better and stronger relations with the United States.

"We discussed numerous issues and especially on the emphasis by the president to work in a constructive and holistic manner on climate change," he said.

McCain, who has mounted a fierce defence of President George W. Bush's strategy to surge nearly 30,000 extra troops into Iraq, a move that goes against broad public opinion, said there was "a certain improvement on the military level but the (Iraqi) government has yet to react in a more efficient manner."
