What about the Greenhouse Effect and carcinogens and particulate pollution from all those explosions and stuff? In NZ, fireworks are being increasingly banned. Soon we will be allowed to suck our thumbs on specified dates and that will be the limit of the fun we are allowed.

We have now got a Tree Religion. I used to be amused by "natives" with their cargo cult ideas and many superstitions. Now, the average Kiwi is as in thrall to superstition as any Aztec of old, but without the pragmatism.

The punishment for hurting a tree is now greater than common assault on a person. We have Taniwha and spiritual incantations for all occasions.

Sustainability is the buzzword. Any official publication and any person who "cares" has to use sustainable or sustainability at least once in each paragraph to show how noble they are and superior to the common ignorant herd. I doubt that it is sustainable to use the words so much. They'll be worn out within a decade.

The USA thumbs its nose at the world and unsustainably fires fireworks into the sky, polluting the planet, exacerbating the Greenhouse Effect, Global Warming and Climate Change all at once.
