I disagree on the article.

What was the purpose of bringing up Descartes' cogito ergo sum? That was Descartes reasoning about what we can know (aka epistemology). The question of the mind / brain relationship or the soul is a question of the philosophy of the mind. Something all together else. Even if we think with only a physical brain, and there is no mind or soul, that doesn't mean we don't think or that we don't exist or that we can't know that we exist. Which are the things Descartes was talking about.

As for scientist's metaphysical speculations about the soul, what value is that? Can it be established scientifically from the study of the brain that no mind or soul exists that could interact with the brain? No, the articles consists of metaphysical speculations masquerading as science.

Scientists shouldn't be pushing a metaphysical agenda. When scientists go beyond their science into making metaphysical speculations, they're not acting as scientists any longer.
