Z, > I would. Not personally, but it should be paid for, and yes, I should be footing some of the bill; I'm in a high enough tax bracket, I think.
What if I told you that Lasik would be totally unnecessary for me, that I can get by with driving glasses that cost me a small fraction of eye surgery?
Since I have to foot the bill for my own health care, by nature I'm forced to evaluate the cost of various treatment options.
Make it all free and you can bet that I'll be choosing the more expensive option. But someone will be paying for it. Not me, of course, since the amount I'll be contributing in taxes or whatever will not change.
Remember, "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need." The secret is to increase your need and reduce your responsibility to donate your abilities.

P.S. - I have to clarify what I said earlier about "irresponsible lazy bums." If I had a family member who needed health care, I'd be glad to help out with the costs, UNLESS he demanded it from me just because I make more money. In response to his demand, I'll tell him he's an "irresponsible lazy bum." I wouldn't care if he has three children to feed and has to work two jobs to do it. Just his demanding attitude itself will draw such a response from me. |
