How old are those cities? What were the folks who started the building on top of the volcano's thinking? The North Island of New Zealand has an active plate boundary running through the middle of it, resulting in active volcanos, geysers and frequent earthquakes. Taupo, the lake and the city, is quite beautiful now but sits on a caldera that has erupted massively and violently in the past and will do so again in the future. There are several locations around the globe, Taupo and Yellowstone among them, that can be classified as super volcanos. They blow infrequently, but when they do, the consequences to the global climate reach far beyond AlGores human caused climate change fantasies.. geology.about.com
