The criminally short sighted idiots in the federal and local governments continue to ignore reality. Here in the supposedly scientifically-advanced Research Triangle area just a few recent developments:
The Feds canceled funding for a light rail mass-transit system, claiming we couldn't show there would be enough usage. This was much to the highway construction industry's glee. (Main roads here are approaching major clog status mornings and afternoons).

Several area shopping centers were discovered to have banned city buses from their parking lots because they were determined to be 'hazardous' to pedestrians. (Read, we don't want poor folks coming here). Quite a bit of hell-raising over that. I suspect they'll change their tune shortly.

A survey of local bus stops found most have no shelter and no place to sit.
So, not only will we not be getting light rail anytime soon, we actively discourage riding buses.
The most likely scenario is that we will resemble Atlanta in a few years. For any not familiar, Atlanta is an urban joke. A traffic-choked, beltline-ringed, sprawling mess, with a puny light rail system.
We may move to the Blue Ridge mountains one of these days. One problem with that, however, the Appalachian mountains have some of the worst air in the country. ( Sulfur laden smog and fly ash from the big TVA power plants to the west)
Meanwhile another air pollution/ozone alert just went up.
