I'd think that could be one aspect, but as we know vitamin D is also crucial in protecting against cancer, maybe they have more vitamin D in their diet? They also seem to be outside more- since they walk more, and recreate outside more- so they get vitamin D that way. So my guess would be it's a combination of lifestyle choices that protect the French from the severity of many lifestyle diseases we see in the US.
