Well, my understanding from here is that boys and girls don't really socialize together much from puberty on, so to the extent that yound males in their 20's make advances on women in the mall (or wherever) it is often pretty juvenile and unwelcome, so the veil is a way of escaping these juvenile unwanted advances. Western women of no particular religion often receive these unwanted awkwark male advances (because they are seen as "liberated" Western sluts), and I've been told that western women enjoy wearing the veil because they are then more likely to be left alone by the dork squad. So....in that context, wearing the veil has nothing to do with religion, it has to do with low development of normal inter-sex relations.

I'd imagine that as the Muslim world enters modern times and general relations between the sexes improves and develops, the veil will fade away. It may take a few hundred years, but modernity will trump it in the end, as it did in other formerly segregated societies as they modernized (Japan comes to mind). That is, of course, unless Iran nukes Israel which then nukes all its neighbors which results in India nuking Pakistan and modernity takes a back seat for a while...
