John, I haven't read Murray.
Thanks for your communicative thoughtful letter, which I have just read. I have too many things on my plate just now, so will be brief here.
You covered both ends of taxation. Discussing the problem of taxation as a bad thing - forcibly taking somebody's money for purposes that serve none of their interests, especially if it is simply given to somebody else.
But I was meaning by predatory, joining the throng of carnivores surrounding the taxpayer, imprisoned in a world wide economic system. No better than slavery. In fact, exactly slavery. You shall work, and pay tax or you shall suffer privation if you don't work. You shall go to jail [or be shot if you resist] if you pay tax. When the taxes are used to benefit the payee, by way of laws, contract enforcement, military protection, police protection, that is at least reasonable.
But democracy is inherently immoral as presently constituted. People can vote to take other people's money for personal gain. Religions are in the queue. Taxpayer's money is used to promote religions in many countries. Not so much in USA, but even there, on the very money "In God We Trust". At least it is a very valuable warning to people not to take the paper on which that is written too seriously.
Must go, bye Maurice |
