I am working on a study of MPT versus the SIP and have taken a look at about 20 companies without respect to size, the period covered is 20 years, here are the 3 key periods for 1 stock.

so we have 3 events
Summer 2006 we call it the Taking.
Sept 11 2001 the Shock
Oct 19th 1987 Black Monday

here is one companies life through them all; covering 20 years; COHU
COHUs float was 11 million until it split 2 for 1 in 1998 or 1999.current float approx 22 million, the company has paid out over 4.15 in dividends over these 20 years (cant be exact due to chart crowding) .
2006
By way of example COHU on April 19th 2006 COHU hit 21.28, by Sept 11th the stock hit 15.17 on a whopping 62,000 shares.
Black Monday
While on Oct 16th 1987 closed Cohu closed at 8.25 on 52800 shares the following Black Monday it dropped to 6.63 and hit a yearly low of 5 five short days later on 213,000 shares.
Sept 01 Shock
Looking into the Sept 11th Crash of 2001 Cohu closed on August 24th at 21.13 on 85,600 shares, closing at 16.29 on the eve of Sept 11. Opening on Sept 17th at 15.50 on a whopping 288,500 shares, but bottoming at 13.40 on Sept 21 on 145,800 shares.

Comparing the short duration crashes versus the long duration crashes is a good exercize in understanding price behavior under different conditions.
