The relationships that matter in the Bush White House revolve around their specific ideological clique. This is why so many people don't grasp the difference between criticizing this administration but not attacking the whole Republican party or real traditional conservatives.

This bunch is neither; it cares only about its own, looks after its own and treats everyone else with contempt much of the time. Of course, that is a recipe for implosion in a popular democracy like ours. But they are so addicted to the Kool-Aid they really thought they would build a lasting majority on that foundation.

LBJ did a lot to cultivate the Hill and even then, he lost his key supporters by '68, just like Bush is losing them one by one now.
