Oil was one factor as was wmd, democracy in the region and an offset to iran. Your argument is stronger if you recognize the multiple reasons for going in because there were no wmds, the democracy experiment failed and we didnt get a base or secure any oil. I think oil was what some of the proponents of this war thought would pay for it. I dont think the aim was to steal it from the iraqis as much as to use it for their own benefit.
