I have no doubt that is popular.
People don't know any better.

Benefits have already been cut starting in 1983.
Taxes have been raised continuously.
Retirement ages have been raised.
SS has already "defaulted" on its original promises.

It is a slow-motion (but continuous) stream of lies
and broken promises. The 1936 pamphlet and the Nestor
case are examples.

SS will never be technically "insolvent".
It will always pay out something.
It will just pay out a lot less than what was promised,
and you will be taxed a lot more for it.
It might morph into a welfare program (where all pretense
of "earned benefits" is gone), and only the poor receive
anything.
