It does strike me that al quaeda is on the run in lebanon and in anbar and is probably not gaining any traction in gaza. If and when the US leaves iraq, I think you will get an iranian protectorate of sorts in the south that will be more of a burden for iran than a blessing. I can see a day a few years post war where the iranians will say screw the arabs and leave the south for the most part.
As for anbar, there is no reason to believe that the alliance between the tribal chiefs and sunni nationalist will fail. I am sure they would continue to get the means to fight al quaeda from the US. The Kurds will be fine. The big quesiton is what happens in the bagdad and in the 50 miles around it. There will be ethnic cleansing and a lot of killing. Al quaeda may thrive is succ an environment. Hopefully the sunnis and shiaa with the help of their supporting states can get the fighting under control in time to control any gains al quaeda make.
Where al quaeda poses its biggest threat is in the west. They have been allowed to regroup in pakistan. Al zawahiri apparently has direct internet connectivity. No wonder Chertoff is worried even if Elroy is not. Time to back away from iraq and concentrate on al quaeda and iran for that matter. With our troops removed from combat, iran is tied down in south but america is free to fight iran if the nuke thing gets out of control. Who will be in the box then? Karen, You still dont admit that we lost vietnam. You follow a group of right wingers who are Denialist. As the Who said, we wont be fooled again. Time for you not to be fooled.
